March 2011 Program - History of The Chichester Country Store: Architectural "finds" During Restoration/renovation
Ron Panneton, current owner of the Chichester Country Store, shared his findings about the construction and ownership of the store at the March meeting of the Chichester Historical Society. During remodeling he found original nine over six windows with sash and brought a sample window for display.
Ron described the construction of the main building as Georgian construction and the room doors have locks indicating this building was once used as an inn. Ron contacted James L Garvin, State Architectural Historian, who estimated that the house, first story of the store and barn were probably erected around 1780. If so, this store may be the oldest continually running stores in the United States.
In his deed research, Ron found a deed transferring ownership from a Dyer Hook to Caleb Pearson in 1794. In 1822 Pearson sold the property with store to James W Towle who then sold the store to George Haines in 1847. Haines sold the property to Harry Kelley in 1905. A second floor and porch appears to have been added to the store by this time.
